The BBC has ordered 13 episodes for a spinoff series of its new Doctor Who series that will air on the BBC Three network. The new series, from Russell T. Davies, is called Torchwood—an anagram of "Doctor Who"—and will feature the character of Captain Jack (John Barrowman), a swashbuckling spacefarer that was introduced last season on Doctor Who. The series is set in modern-day Cardiff. Torchwood will launch in the Christmas special and second season of Doctor Who. The series will center on Torchwood, a renegade group of investigators. No stories will cross over between Torchwood and Doctor Who, the BBC said.

"Torchwood is a British sci-fi paranoid thriller, a cop show with a sense of humor," Davies said in a statement. "It's dark, wild and sexy. It's The X-Files meets This Life. It's a stand-alone series for adult audiences, which will have its own unique identity. I have just begun working on the scripts with a team of writers and cannot wait to see the results."

News: (03/24/05) - Russell T. Davies, writer-producer of the Doctor Who series, recently spoke to SCI FI Wire about Torchwood. "We start filming in May, and we should be on in this country [England] in October," Davies said. "So we'll have two shows running simultaneously, which will be fun."

Davies described the spin off as a 13-part science fiction series for adults. "Doctor Who airs in this country at 7 o'clock at night, so it gets the whole family watching," Davies said. "Torchwood is Earth-based. It takes one of the actors who was very popular from the first [season] of Doctor Who, who is called Captain Jack Harkness [John Barrowman]. He was in five episodes and was hugely successful as a companion to the Doctor [Christopher Eccleston]."

"He's a bisexual con man. Hooray! We need more bisexual con men on our television screens, I think, don't you think? Bisexual con men from the 53rd century, what could be better? He was so enormously successful that we've created a spinoff for him."

Cast:

John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness
Eve Myles as Gwen Cooper
Burn Gorman as Owen Harper
Naoko Mori as Doctor Toshiko Sato
