Stargate Atlantis is a spin-off of the tv series Stargate SG-1, which was based on the Stargate (1994) movie.

The plot centers on a multi-national team of explorers that take a one-way trip to the lost city of Atlantis in a distant galaxy, where a primitive human civilization is threatened by a sinister new alien enemy..the Wraith.

News:

(05/23/06) - Gateworld recently spoke to writer Martin Gero about the upcoming third season.

"The Wraith are a presence in the galaxy, undeniably, but ... You know, it's interesting. Season One, we were just trying to get our feet beneath us and trying to figure out what kind of stories and what kinds of episodes we wanted to do," he said. "Season Two, for me, for the most part, felt like bigger, better, more confident Season One episodes."

"Season Three feels like, finally, we're doing some really fresh and interesting stuff. Part of the way that we've been able to do that is move away from Wraith stories," Gero said, "and we're doing much more stand-alone episodes, as well as introducing a new major villain this year."

(11/21/05) - The SCI FI Channel has announced today that the principal cast members of both Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis will return. Joe Flanigan, Torri Higginson, David Hewlett, Rachel Luttrell, Paul McGillion, and Jason Momoa will all return to Stargate Atlantis next season. Ben Browder, Amanda Tapping, Christopher Judge, Michael Shanks, and Beau Bridges will all return to Stargate SG-1 next season. Also, Claudia Black (Vala) will join the cast of Stargate SG-1.

(10/25/05) - The SCI FI Channel has announced that it has ordered a third season of Stargate Atlantis and a 10th season of Stargate SG-1. Production on both (20-episode) seasons will begin in early 2006 for summer premieres. Stargate Atlantis has averaged more than 2.3 million viewers a week for the first half of its sophomore season.

(08/08/05) - Jaime Ray Newman (Lt. Cadman in Friday's Stargate Atlantis episode "Duet") was interviewed recently. A fan posted it at http://www.ledelirium.com/forum/sutra17676.html#17676.

(2/07/05) - The SCI FI Channel announced today that Mitch Pileggi (X-Files) will join the cast of Stargate Atlantis for season two. Pileggi will play the recurring role of a hard-nosed colonel who butts heads with Dr. Weir and Maj. Sheppard.

(12/10/04) - According to the Vancouver Province, Paul McGillion (Dr. Beckett) has been promoted to a regular cast member for second season.

(11/15/04) - The SCI FI Channel has announced that it has ordered a second season of Stargate Atlantis and a ninth season of Stargate SG-1. The channel has ordered 20 new episodes of each show and production on both is set to begin in March 2005 for summer premieres.

(8/9/04) - Joe Flanigan recently had an interview with Mediasharx.

(7/20/04) - The Futon Critic has posted detailed info on the ratings for the Stargate Atlantis premiere. Atlantis delivered the best performance of any series in Sci Fi Channel history, delivering 4.191 million viewers (3.2 household rating), an increase of 30% over last week's record breaking eighth season premiere of Stargate SG-1.

(6/22/04) - Gateworld has posted an interview with actor David Hewlett (Dr. McKay).

(6/08/04) On July 5th the SciFi Channel will air the special one-hour program, "From Stargate to Atlantis: A SciFi Lowdown." The program will bring viewers up to speed with the Stargate setting. It will prepare viewers for both the eighth series of "Stargate SG-1" and the premiere of Stargate Atlantis.

(12/23/03) SCI FI Wire reports that Adam Baldwin (Firefly) is pursuing a role on the upcoming Stargate Atlantis, the spin-off of Stargate SG-1. "I'm hoping that can work out," he said during an interview at the Los Angeles Comic Book and Science Fiction Convention. "We're working on it. Nothing set in stone just yet. I'm actually trying convince them to hire me." He also said at the interviews, "He's a military guy. I would be one of the supporting ensemble guys. Not the lead guy. I'm a little past my prime. They want someone in there in their early 20s. You've got to launch a show with a 20-something guy. That's just the nature of the beast these days. So I hopefully could jump in and add my experience to any new show."

The website SCI FI Wire reports that the SCI FI Channel has confirmed that it will spin off its hit Stargate SG-1 series into Stargate Atlantis, a weekly series set to premiere in the summer of 2004. Production for 20 hourlong episodes is set to start in early 2004. Stargate Atlantis will debut as a two-hour movie event on SCI FI and will feature crossover appearances by members of the SG-1 cast. Atlantis' regular timeslot will accompany Stargate SG-1’s 8th season. Atlantis will be distributed by MGM Worldwide Television Distribution. Brad Wright and Robert Cooper will serve as executive producers on the new series. Cooper is currently executive producer on Stargate SG-1; Brad Wright is co-creator of Stargate SG-1 and served as the series' executive producer for six seasons.
