News:

(03/17/05) - Sci Fi Wire recently spoke to executive producter Russell T. Davies about his revival of this long-running BBC series (which debuts on SCI FI Channel with episodes "Rose" and "The End of the World", starting at 9 p.m. ET/PT on March 17). "I think the BBC had their eye on it as a very good property that could be resurrected," Davies said in an interview. "And the drama department as well as the controller of BBC1, wanted to work with me, which sounds very arrogant, but it's the truth. They'd been asking me to write all sorts of things; every year, they'd phone up and say, 'Do you want to want to adapt A Tale of Two Cities? or 'do you want to write another series about gay men?' [Davies was best known for his series Queer as Folk.] Or something like that, and every year I quite confidently (and cheekily) sat there and said, 'No, I just want to do Doctor Who!'"

"Once they asked me to do it and commissioned me, I came up with my take on it, and the miracle from my point of view was that I was given a clean slate," he said.

"My only wariness in going to work for the BBC, especially on an in-house production, is that the BBC is a labyrinthine organization. I was very wary of the red tape, the committees, focus groups and all the systems that were in place. But, to my astonishment, I discovered that the opposite was true. When I did my treatment, I didn't have to go through 27 different committees, so I was given an enormous amount of freedom, and then they followed that up by backing it with a budget, which again was my worry. I didn't want to do a cheap version of Doctor Who, but the heads of various departments and the heads of certain channels all wanted the same thing, so everyone was in the right place, and I was lucky enough to be the one they wanted."

"The interesting thing about when the BBC approached me, I was amazed that they wanted the same thing that I did, which was that they also wanted the series to be on in prime time. You could have done a 9 o'clock, post-watershed version of Doctor Who on BBC2, which is one of our smaller channels, a more niche or elite channel, and that would have created a much more adult Doctor Who, much more like the new Battlestar Galactica, or they could have commissioned something with a much smaller budget for, say, BBC3, which is a wild youth-based channel, in which case, Doctor Who would have been possibly a [bit] Monty Python: very wild and extreme and even a bit radical and much more comedy-based. But I was delighted that they put it on for the primary channel, which is BBC1, on Saturday night."

"I know it isn't the same in the States, but in Britain, Saturday night is the ratings war night, in which we play Pop Idol [similar to the U.S. American Idol] and all the big entertainment shows, the Dance Fever shows. It's the biggest battleground of all, so the fact the BBC was investing in it so much by putting it in that prime-time slot very much determined what it should be, which is very much the sort of Doctor Who that I wanted to make anyway, which was a very inclusive version, which would include all sorts of viewers, not just niche science-fiction viewers, but was a great big, bold, wild family drama. So I was lucky that the constellations were in the right shape."

(12/01/05) - The BBC has made the unusual decision to release the Doctor Who: The Complete First Season DVD in the United States before the show had found a broadcast outlet. But the BBC plans to still air the show on American TV.

The U.S. DVD will feature the entire first season of Doctor Who and hits stores on Feb. 14, 2006. The DVD will also feature audio commentary by cast and crew, including Davies, Piper, John Barrowman (Captain Jack), Mark Gatiss and Simon Callow; a new Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound mix for all episodes; more than five hours of "making of" interviews and behind-the-scenes footage; a BBC interview with Christopher Eccleston; and a behind-the-scenes look of the upcoming holiday episode The Christmas Invasion, which premieres this month in the United Kingdom. The suggested retail price is $99.98.

"It will be going on television," Burton Cromer (vice president of BBC Direct) said in an interview with SCI FI Wire. "There're lots of discussions going on, and I can't really talk about that. This is a unique situation, really, because there are so many fans of Doctor Who ... already out there, and we were just finding [that] people were getting ... secondhand copies or copies from the U.K. ... We really wanted fans to get the best, most complete version in the United States as [soon as] we possibly could. So we made the decision, and it is unique, to go ahead of the TV broadcast with the DVD and to release the gift set of the DVD basically within two and a half to three months [after] the U.K. [version]."

"The good news for us is that we already have that loyal fan base, but then when the show does broadcast in the U.S., we'll have a whole new fan base, because it's just a new Doctor Who: very exciting, but still the great stories and as great as the old Doctor Who," he said.

(6/13/05) - According to casting calls received by London and Welsh actors, the Cybermen will return for season two of the new series.

(05/24/05) - According to The Sun, Billie Piper, who plays the Doctor's sidekick Rose Tyler, will be leaving the show next season.

A BBC insider said, "Billie's really proved herself as an actress in Doctor Who and she's been bombarded with offers of work both in England and in America. Billie will feature in some of the second series. But her character Rose won't be the Doctor Who companion at the end of it. It's a nine-month hard slog filming, Chris and Billie were knackered.

"It's claimed that she could appear in just three episodes of the new series, which begins filming in July, but programme bosses hope she'll stick around for seven. David Tennant is taking over from Christopher Eccleston for the new series after Chris made the decision to quit at the end of March.

(04/19/05) - BBC has confirmed that David Tennant will be playing the tenth Doctor Who. Tennant's recent credits include the critically-acclaimed drama series Casanova and Blackpool. Billie Piper will return as Rose Tyler next season. The new 13-episode series and Christmas special begins filming in Cardiff in the summer. The Christmas special will probably feature the famous "regeneration" scene where the ninth Doctor will die and become the tenth.

(04/04/05) - The March 26 U.K. premiere of BBC's new Doctor Who series drew around 10 million viewers, which makes it a huge hit for the BBC. There are reports that the BBC, encouraged by the ratings, has ordered a second season. But Christopher Eccleston has quit the title role out of fear of being typecasted. There are talks of replacing him with Casanova star David Tennant. Billie Piper is expected to return for a second season.

(01/27/05) - According to BBCAmerica, the next two Doctor Who DVD titles, that will follow The Green Death and The Visitation, are The Leisure Hive and Ghost Light. There is no exact date yet, but it will be in Spring 2005.

(12/06/04) - The BBC has posted a teaser trailer for the new Doctor Who series.

(10/14/04) - I have started adding links to transcipts found at the Doctor Who Transcript Project website.

(11/17/03) - Russell T. Davies, the producer who is reviving Doctor Who for the BBC, told the British TV Times that the new Doctor's companion will be different from those in the original series. "A screaming girly companion is unacceptable now," he told the magazine. "I don't mean in terms of women's rights. Dramatically, we've got Buffy the Vampire Slayer now, so a screaming girly companion would be laughed out of the room." Davies also revealed that the new series won't rely on old monsters.

The ninth Doctor Who has been officially selected. The BBC reported that 40-year old British dramatic actor Christopher Eccleston has been cast to play the Time Lord in this new incarnation of the Doctor Who series.
