News:

(04/11/06) - Disney-ABC Television Group announced, starting in May, that it will offer ad-supported episodes of Alias (entire current season) and Lost (current full-length episodes) at ABC.com. This is part of a two-month-long experiment.

The episodes will be available the day after they premiere on ABC. Users will be able to pause and move back and forth between chapters within each episode, but will not have the ability to fast-forward through advertisements.

(11/28/05) - ABC has announced that Alias will not return for a sixth season. Alias will end its five-season run in May 2006. The series has seen a drop in ratings since moving to Thursdays from Wednesdays this season.

Entertainment President Stephen McPherson said in a statement: "Alias is not going to wind down as it comes to an end; it's going to rev up, and we're going to make it the event it deserves to be."

(09/08/05) - According to TV Guide Online, ABC has all but confirmed that Michael Vartan's character Michael Vaughn is being killed off, despite Vartan's denial of that to Entertainment Weekly. Rumors of his character's demise have circulated for weeks, mostly in the New York Post, which has even reported that the name of Jennifer Garner's onetime boyfriend can never be uttered on set.

An anonymous representative of Alias told TV Guide Online: "[This] is so not true! Of course people say [his] name. He was loved very much on the set, and [cast mates] remember him fondly. All this misinformation is being put out by fans who are angry about what happened with [Vaughn]."

(09/01/05) - Rachel Nichols (The Inside), whose character, Rachel Gibson, will join the series this fall. Gibson will tread Sydney Bristow's path, executive producer Jeff Pinkner told TV Guide Online. "She joins the team early in the season, but they don't actively set out to recruit her," said Pinkner. "And if I were to tell you much more, it would give away the fun of meeting her character." Introducing Nichols will "show how you [create] a superagent like Sydney Bristow [Jennifer Garner]," Pinkner said. "She doesn't have the skills Sydney has, but she will need to acquire them over the course of the season."

Balthazar Getty joins the show as Thomas Grace, a rough APO agent and French actress Élodie Bouchez will play a cohort from Vaughn's past. "She and Vaughn share a history," Pinkner said. "And in our season finale we started to tease the audience with what that history is and what secrets Vaughn has been keeping from Sydney. We knew there would be another player in that story, and [Bouchez] plays that role."

The new season will..."reveal a new enemy who is far more pervasive and dangerous and mysterious than any we have fought before."

(08/11/05) - According to The Insider web site, there is a rumor that Jennifer Garner may quit as the star of Alias next season. Citing an anonymous source, "Garner has made it clear that she probably won't be returning to the show next year for a sixth season."

It is rumored that producers are betting on this season's new co-star, Rachel Nichols, to replace Garner. A representative for the show told the site: "I haven't heard that, so I can't confirm that."

(08/04/05) - Alias began production in Los Angeles on its upcoming fifth season, the network announced on August 3rd. The new season will pick up the cliffhanger of last year.

Here's how ABC describes it: "After they both survive the crash, [Sydney] learns that the man she has known as Michael Vaughn is under investigation and suspected of being a double agent. She questions whether their business and personal relationship over the years had all been a lie. When Sydney discovers that she is pregnant with Vaughn's baby, she is determined to uncover the truth about him. Meanwhile, because of Jack's [Victor Garber] past betrayal by Irina [Lena Olin], he begins to worry that his daughter may suffer the same fate as he did. He will also have to deal with the fact that he will soon become a grandfather, while still learning how to be a dad. Sloane [Ron Rifkin] will have to do some soul-searching of his own, as he makes an unholy alliance in his desperate fight to find a cure for Nadia [Mia Maestro], who is still in a coma."

New regular cast members will include Rachel Nichols (The Inside) as Rachel Gibson and Élodie Bouchez as Renée Rienne. Greg Grunberg (Agent Weiss) told TV Guide Online that he will be leaving Alias.

(08/01/05) - Stephen McPherson, president of ABC entertainment, told reporters at the Television Critics Association press tour in Beverly Hills, California that Jennifer Garner's pregnancy will be written into the show next season. "We are going to embrace the fact that she's pregnant," he said. "We're adding some characters to give her some new dynamics and some relationships to play off of. In terms of the actual creative [side], the show runners this year and [creator J.J. Abrams] are really focused on how to do that and how to make it realistic and not campy. There are certainly some fun examples of how she can embrace that in the line of work she does. But we also don't want to put her in situations where she's endangering herself and the baby, so there's this suspension of disbelief that, I think, won't take place then."

"Some of [the changes] we will get from characters that we're adding," McPherson said. "She's going to get to be mentoring a younger agent and you'll be able to get some of that maybe sex appeal, if you will, in different places. But I think you're going to see a really interesting and dynamic Jennifer in that role."

(07/29/05) - ABC has announced that Rachel Nichols (The Inside, The Amityville Horror) is joining the cast of Alias for the series' fifth season. Nichols will be playing Rachel Gibson, a technical analyst working for a black ops division of the CIA. Alias will have its season premiere on Thursday, September 29 (8:00-9:00 p.m., ET).

(05/17/05) - According to Variety, ABC will move Lost to 9 p.m. ET/PT Wednesdays from its current 8 p.m. and move Alias to 8 p.m. Thursdays. The new SF series Invasion will follow Lost on Wednesdays in the 10 p.m. timeslot.

(04/15/05) - According to Zap2it, Alias has been renewed for a fifth season.

(01/07/05) - According to The Hollywood Reporter, "J.J. Abrams' other ABC drama, Alias, returned [on January 5th] with a flourish in its two-hour, fourth-season premiere, averaging 16 million viewers and 6.7/16 in adults 18-49. But the spy saga slipped a bit in its second hour as it competed against two 10 p.m. perennials, CSI: NY on CBS and Law & Order on NBC."

(12/09/04) - Isabella Rossellini told SCI FI Wire that she has been asked to reprise her role as Katya on Alias.

(11/19/04) - J.J. Abrams, creator of Alias, told USA Today that there are some major changes happening to the show for the upcoming fourth season. Sydney Bristow gets a new boss, a new job in the CIA, and a new addition to her family (Sydney's half-sister, Nadia).

The team move to "a black ops division in the CIA," Abrams told the newspaper. "A cool new organization with cool new headquarters."

(11/17/04) - According to ZENtertainment, the fourth season of Alias wil premiere Jan. 5 with a new two-hour episode airing from 9-11 p.m. ET/PT. The series will stay in its new Wednesday 9 p.m. timeslot, after Abrams' other ABC series, Lost.

(8/3/04) - According to TV Guide Online, Oscar-nominated actress Angela Bassett will play the show's new CIA director in the upcoming fourth season.

(7/16/04) - Alias received eight nominations for the 56th Annual Prime-Time Emmy Awards, including outstanding lead actress in a drama (Jennifer Garner) and outstanding supporting actor in a drama (Victor Garber).

Jennifer Garner has been nominated for a Golden Globe for best actress in a drama television series. The Golden Globes will be presented Jan. 25, 2004 airing live on NBC.

TV Guide Online reported that Alias and Joan of Arcadia were among the picks of the American Film Institute for the top 10 shows of 2003.
